Location: UK or Ireland, with frequent travel to Texas, US · Reports to: CEO / CTO · Type: Full-time
What you'll do
- Own the technical roadmap for a novel electric drilling system, coordinating work across mechanical, thermal, electrical, hydraulic, and controls engineering functions
- Lead, mentor, and grow a team of engineers and technical leads across multiple disciplines
- Drive design reviews, validation processes, and risk management across the engineering program
- Interface with manufacturing, field operations, and supply chain partners to ensure designs are manufacturable, testable, and field-ready
- Represent engineering in cross-functional planning with commercial, HSE, and executive stakeholders
- Manage relationships with field test sites, vendors, and partners, including regular on-site presence in Texas during test campaigns and field trials
- Establish and maintain engineering standards, documentation practices, and safety-critical design processes appropriate for high-temperature, high-pressure downhole environments
- Support fundraising and investor technical diligence as needed
What you bring
- Significant experience (typically 10+ years) in engineering leadership roles, ideally within energy, drilling, oilfield services, aerospace, or another complex hardware/systems environment
- Track record of leading multidisciplinary hardware engineering teams (mechanical, electrical, thermal, and/or controls) from concept through field deployment
- Strong systems-level thinking — comfortable making trade-off decisions across coupled engineering domains
- Experience with rigorous validation and design-review processes for safety-critical or mission-critical hardware
- Excellent communication skills, with experience working alongside commercial and executive stakeholders
- Must be based in the UK or Ireland
- Willingness and ability to travel to Texas frequently (field test campaigns, vendor visits, site commissioning) — expect recurring multi-day/week trips
Preferred, not required
- Direct experience in drilling, oil & gas, or geothermal engineering
- Experience with high-temperature or downhole electronic/electrical systems
- Experience scaling an engineering organization at a start-up or scale-up
What we offer
- Competitive salary and equity
- Opportunity to lead engineering on a category-defining energy technology
- A small, high-caliber technical team tackling genuinely hard engineering problems
A small team, real hardware, and a machine that has to survive one of the harshest environments engineering has ever been sent into. If this sounds like your kind of challenge, we'd like to hear from you.
