What you'll do
- Own the thermal management strategy across the platform, including insulation systems, heat barriers, and thermal protection for equipment operating in extreme high-temperature environments
- Lead selection, design, and qualification of high-performance industrial insulation materials and systems
- Direct thermal modelling and analysis to predict heat ingress, component temperature limits, and thermal life over operating conditions
- Set and enforce thermal engineering standards, including testing protocols, material qualification processes, and documentation
- Manage and mentor a team of thermal and materials engineers, coordinating closely with mechanical and electrical engineering leads
- Evaluate and qualify insulation materials and vendors, including large-scale industrial insulation suppliers
- Oversee thermal validation testing, from lab-scale material characterization through full-system field trials
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for thermal performance issues arising during testing or field operations
- Represent thermal engineering in cross-functional design reviews and technical planning
What you bring
- Significant experience (typically 8–10+ years) in thermal engineering, with several years in a technical leadership role
- Deep, hands-on experience with very large-scale industrial insulation systems (e.g. high-temperature process industries, energy, aerospace, or heavy industrial applications)
- Strong materials science background, particularly in high-temperature insulation materials (ceramics, composites, refractory materials, or similar)
- Experience taking thermal/insulation systems from material selection through qualification, testing, and field deployment
- Familiarity with thermal modelling and analysis methods for extreme-temperature environments
- Strong cross-disciplinary communication skills, comfortable working closely with mechanical and electrical engineering counterparts
- Must be based in the UK or Ireland
- Willingness to travel to Texas as needed for test campaigns and site visits
Preferred, not required
- Experience with ceramic or ceramic-composite insulation materials
- Background in oil & gas, drilling, geothermal, or downhole thermal systems
- Experience with thermal barrier systems in confined, high-pressure, or vibration-heavy environments
- Experience scaling a thermal/materials engineering function at a start-up or scale-up
