Location: UK or Ireland, with frequent travel to Texas, US · Reports to: Head of Engineering / CTO · Type: Full-time
What you'll do
- Own the electrical systems architecture across the drilling platform, including power delivery, drive electronics, and control systems
- Lead design, analysis, and validation of high-power electrical subsystems operating in harsh downhole and surface conditions
- Direct work on power electronics, motor control, cabling/interconnect systems, and surface power distribution as relevant to the platform
- Set and enforce electrical engineering standards, including safety-critical design practices, testing protocols, and documentation
- Manage and mentor a team of electrical engineers, and coordinate closely with mechanical, thermal, and controls engineering leads
- Oversee electrical integration during manufacturing, assembly, and field commissioning
- Lead troubleshooting and root-cause analysis for electrical issues arising during testing or field operations
- Support vendor selection and management for electrical components and systems
- Represent electrical engineering in cross-functional design reviews and technical planning
- Regular on-site presence in Texas during test campaigns, commissioning, and field trials
What you bring
- Significant experience (typically 8–10+ years) in electrical engineering, with several years in a technical leadership role
- Strong background in high-power electrical systems — power electronics, motor drives, and/or power distribution — in a demanding industrial, energy, or aerospace environment
- Experience designing electrical systems for harsh environments (high temperature, high vibration, or similarly demanding conditions)
- Track record of taking electrical systems from design through validation to field deployment
- Familiarity with relevant electrical safety standards and certification processes for industrial/energy equipment
- Strong cross-disciplinary communication skills, comfortable working closely with mechanical and thermal engineering counterparts
- Must be based in the UK or Ireland
- Willingness and ability to travel to Texas frequently (field test campaigns, commissioning, vendor visits) — expect recurring multi-day/week trips
Preferred, not required
- Experience with high-voltage DC power systems
- Background in oil & gas, drilling, or geothermal electrical systems
- Experience with long-distance power transmission or downhole electrical/electronic systems
- Experience scaling an electrical engineering function at a start-up or scale-up
What we offer
- Competitive salary and equity
- Ownership of a critical technical domain on a category-defining energy technology
- A small, high-caliber technical team tackling genuinely hard engineering problems
A small team, real hardware, and a machine that has to survive one of the harshest environments engineering has ever been sent into. If this sounds like your kind of challenge, we'd like to hear from you.
